Happy Children's Day 2018

In India, Children's Day is celebrated on 14 November, on the birthday of the first Prime Minister of independent India, who was fondly called Chacha Nehru (Uncle Nehru) or Chachaji (Uncle), and who emphasized the importance of giving love and affection to children, to give him tribute. After the death of Jawaharlal Nehru in 27 May 1964, it was unanimously decided to celebrate his birthday as Bal Diwas or Children's Day in India.

On this day, many schools organize fun activities for students such as games, competitions, museum or zoo visits etc. Additionally, government and nongovernment organizations, NGOs, private bodies and others (like housing societies) conduct a variety of competitions as well as events for children to let them know about their rights and make them happy and cheerful. TV channels also air interesting programs for children on 14 November. Parents take part in this event very enthusiastically to make their children happy – they distribute sweets and/or greeting cards to their kids, go on picnics, and in general enjoy the day with their children.

Suzuki Gixxer 2018

Suzuki Gixxer

The Suzuki Gixxer (GSX-150) is a 154.9 cc (9.45 cu in) naked motorcycle from Suzuki. The bike was launched in September 2014. Its design is similar to the GSX-S1000.

Suzuki’s latest entrant to the 150cc arena is this, the Gixxer. It has spawned a fully-faired version and even a cruiser, but the naked is the original version. It replaced the GS150R and still remains one of the best 150cc motorcycles to buy today. 

The Suzuki Gixxer SF (GSX-150F), a faired version of the Gixxer was launched on 7 April 2015. SF stands for Sport Fairing. The fully faired version is 4 kg heavier than the naked version; the other specifications remain the same. With its aerodynamic fairing, the faired version is faster by about 10 km/h and reaches a top speed of about 130 km/h.

Special Edition

Suzuki has launched special editions of their naked and faired bike with cosmetic changes of Matte gray and Black body colour combination with a racing flag inspired by MotoGP. Suzuki launched a new Special Edition colour scheme in 2017 with a combination of Orange, White and Black colors.

The Gixxer has a disc brake at both ends. Single-channel ABS is also now an option, although it is a Rs 6000 upgrade over the regular Gixxer. The instrument cluster is an all-digital one that matches the best in class in terms of information displayed. The shift light is programmable. You can have the Gixxer in a total of five different paint schemes, two of which are dual-tone schemes.

Maruti Swift 2018

Maruti Suzuki Swift Prices & Variants: The Maruti Swift is priced between Rs 4.99 and Rs 8.76 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It is available in four variants - L, V, Z and Z+.

  Maruti Suzuki Swift Engine: The Swift can be had with either a petrol or a diesel engine. The Swift diesel is powered by a 1.3-litre engine that puts out 75PS and 190Nm, while the petrol version gets a  1.2-litre engine that generates 83PS and 113Nm. Both engines are available with either a 5-speed MT or a 5-speed AMT.

Maruti Suzuki Swift Features: The Swift is quite a feature-loaded hatchback as it gets dual front airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) and ISOFIX child seat anchors as standard across the range. However, in a test conducted by Global NCAP,  the Swift scored a dismal 2-star rating in adult as well as child occupant safety.

  Other features on offer include auto LED projector headlamps with LED daytime running lamps (DRLs), tail lamps with LED brake lights, electrically adjustable outside rearview mirrors (ORVMs), automatic climate control, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, rear parking sensors with parking camera and push-button start.

Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu Birthday

Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu

OM Zamfirescu was born in Galați, Romania on 10 November 1887. Her father, Atanase Leonida, was a career officer while her mother, Matilda Gill, was the daughter of a French-born engineer. Her brother was the engineer Dimitrie Leonida.

Due to prejudices against women in the sciences, Zamfirescu was rejected by the School of Bridges and Roads in Bucharest. In 1909 she was accepted at the Royal Academy of Technology Berlin, Charlottenburg. She graduated in 1912, with a degree in engineering. It has been claimed that Zamfirescu was the world's first female engineer, but the Irish engineer Alice Perry graduated six years before Zamfirescu in 1906.

Returning to Romania, Zamfirescu worked as an assistant at the Geological Institute of Romania. During World War I, she joined the Red Cross. Around this time, she met and married chemist Constantin Zamfirescu, brother of writer Duiliu Zamfirescu.

After the war, Zamfirescu returned to the Geological Institute. She led several geology laboratories and participated in various field studies, including some that identified new resources of coal, shale, natural gas, chromium, bauxite and copper. Zamfirescu also taught physics and chemistry.

Zamfirescu retired in 1963, aged 75. She died at the age of 86 on 25 November 1973.

Honours and awards

Zamfirescu was the first woman member of A.G.I.R. (General Association of Romanian Engineers).

A street in Sector 1 of Bucharest bears her name.

She was the subject of a Google Doodle for her 131st birthday on 10 November 2018.

Chennai Metro Rail

The Chennai Metro is a rapid transit system serving the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The system commenced service in 2015 after partially opening the first phase of the project. The network consists of two color-coded lines covering a length of 35 kilometers (22 mi).

The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), a joint venture between Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu built and operates the Chennai Metro. The system has a mix of underground and elevated stations and uses standard gauge. The services operate daily between 06:00 and 22:00 with a varying frequency of 10 to 20 minutes.

The system has also planned to take over the existing Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System by 2021, which would be upgraded to operate using the rolling stock of the Chennai Metro.CMRL was recognized by the International Association of Public Transport in 2011.

Construction began in June 2009 and the first stretch, covering seven stations from Koyambedu to Alandur over a distance of 10 kilometers (6.2 mi), began operation on 29 June 2015. As of May 2018, Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount on the Green line and AG-DMS to Chennai International Airport on Blue line are commercially operational which brings the total operational network over 35 km (22 mi).
